The band programs at Chipley High School and Roulhac Middle School continued their long tradition of earning top ratings at the 2026 Florida Bandmasters Association District 2 Concert Music Performance Assessment, which was hosted in part on the campuses of CHS and RMS on Thursday March 5.
The CHS Symphonic Band earned straight superior ratings from the three stage adjudicators, as did the RMS Symphonic Band. The RMS Concert Band earned two superiors and one excellent rating. Additionally, all three ensembles easily earned superior ratings from a fourth adjudicator in the category of sightreading. Sightreading is the process in which a band is given a total of eight minutes to learn two brand new, never-before-seen pieces of music and perform them. While the stage performance is prepared for months, the sightreading process happens on the spot and is a test of a band’s musical literacy.
Both CHS band director Shad Steptoe and RMS band director Sam Toole are very proud of their students’ performances, as both programs are currently in a years-long streak of earning overall superior ratings at this important annual assessment.
