Wildflower alert

Coastal plain pogonia

This is a rather secretive orchid (Cleistesiopsis oricamporum) that grows in our area and is listed as endangered in Florida. It is one of our showier orchids with its three dark recurved sepals like an exotic headdress, and a highly decorated lower lip (about an inch long) designed to lure in pollinators. It grows in damp areas and  grows about a foot tall.
