The Vernon High School girls weightlifting team traveled to Arnold last Thursday to compete against not only Arnold, but also Mosley, North Bay Haven, Bozeman, Franklin County and South Walton. Haley Alderman placed fourth in the 101-lb. class; Morgan Hammack won first place in the 110-lb. class; Keirsten Gilmore placed third in the 139-lb. class; Jordan Johnson placed fifth in the 183-lb. class; and Aerianna Johnson placed third in the unlimited weight class. This was the first competition that any of the girls have competed in. Out of the five girls who had top five finishes, four are freshmen.
Monday, Vernon hosted Altha, South Walton, Freeport and Chipley for their first home meet of the season. Haley Alderman was first in the 101-lb. class; Morgan Hammack placed first in the 110-lb. class; Shayla Works placed third in the 119-lb. class; Keirsten Gilmore placed first in the 139-lb. class; Jordan Johnson placed first in the 183-lb. class; Alexis Holley placed second in the unlimited class; and Aerianna Johnson placed third in the unlimited class.

“We have a very young team with no returning athletes,” said Coach Lee Richards. “Most of these girls are freshmen so it is very exciting to see so many top three finishes with such a young group. Morgan Hammack has now won two meets against nine different schools by a large margin. As a freshman this is exceptional for boy’s or girl’s weightlifting.”
