Chipola to host Milton Johnson Classic, Nov. 18-19

MARIANNA— Both Chipola teams host the Milton Johnson Classic Nov. 18-19 in the Johnson Center.

The Lady Indians play East Georgia State at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, and Georgia Highlands at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19. The Indians play Reddevil’s Academy, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. and Combine Academy, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. Tallahassee plays Combine, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. and Reddevil’s, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. Pensacola faces East Georgia, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.

The Lady Indians are 2-0 after a big 70-29 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Nov. 4. Barbara Johnson led Chipola with 19 points and 4 steals. Raven Baker-Northcross and Sydnee McDonald both scored 11 points and both had 6 rebounds.

The Lady Indians scored a 78-70 win over Trinity Valley on Nov. 5. Tiaera Phillips led Chipola with 20 points. Danielle Garven had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Barbara Johnson scored 11. Chipola is number 2 in the FCSAA State Poll behind top-ranked Gulf Coast. The Lady Indians are number 7 in the NJCAA National Poll.

The Chipola men’s team improved to 2-1 on the year with a big 103-73 win over Faith Baptist on Nov. 8.  DeShawn Martin and Carter Skaggs scored 18 apiece in the win for Chipola.

Yuat Alok scored 14 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Eric Cobb had 12 points with 9 rebounds.

Chipola split a pair of games in the Panhandle Classic Nov. 4-5. Chipola trounced Conrad Academy, 116-65, on Nov. 4. Eric Turner led the Indians with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Carter Skaggs had 18 points and 6 rebounds. Jahshire Hardenett scored 11. Taevon Ashmeade and Yuat Alok each scored 10.

The Indians lost a close 82-77 game to Jones County Junior College on Nov. 5. Chipola was led by Yuat Alok with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Deric Patton scored 11.

Second year Chipola men’s basketball coach Bret Campbell leads the Indians into battle with a pair of seasoned players. Forward Eric Turner averaged 11 points and nearly 6 rebounds a game season last year for Chipola. Point guard Taevon Ashmeade started in final stretch of the 2016 conference season.
