Saturday, October 15, found the Washington County Historical Society/Farmers Market bustling with activity as Chipley Garden Club’s 5th Annual Scarecrow Building Contest & History Express got underway.
Live music for the dual event was provided by folk singer Ernie Toole and Ricky Kent, Alabama Music Association Bluegrass Horizon Award Winner – Vocals & Instrumental. DJ Mex kept everyone hopping in between. Historian Dale Cox entertained the children with ghost stories based on local historical events and Pit Master Kenny Rudd provided BBQ sandwiches, chicken-on-a-stick, and funnel cakes.
Under the pavilion a host of crafters sold their wares – handmade brooms, wood crafts, furniture, jewelry, art, home décor, and more. The farmers were on hand, also, with fresh vegetables and home canned goodies. The cake auction offered a wide variety of sweets and provided a bit of competition to visitors. Children, and some grown-ups, enjoyed coloring activities, dinging the train bell, and making “ghosts in a jar” in the Kids Zone.
The lawn was populated with scarecrows created by young and old, and even a few businesses. Garden Club President Debbie Mitchell commented, “We are so pleased to offer the scarecrow event. This year we have 17 entries and, once again, we are amazed by the creative talents of our community. We had two big winners of the day: Local artist Karen Roland’s “Lady Raven” took three categories, and eight year old Jaylee Manuel ,who put her entry together Friday night, went home with $100 in prize money and a home-made Ghost cake!“
