Chipola ranked number 53 in U.S. by

MARIANNA—Chipola College officials announced Monday that ranked Chipola number 53 on its list of the best community colleges in the U.S. Chipola was sixth among the 28 Florida Colleges eligible for the list.

“We’re very proud of our national ranking,” said college president, Dr. Jason Hurst. “We believe our students and employees are some of the very best in the country. This ranking affirms that we are accomplishing our mission of providing access to quality learning opportunities.”

Hurst said the WalletHub ranking adds to a list of recent honors for the college, including four consecutive nominations for the prestigious Aspen Prize (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017) and Chipola’s Silver classification in the Florida College System Florida’s performance-based funding program.

WalletHub is a group that researches the best value in financial institutions, educational institutions, including advisers and insurance brokers. The research project evaluated 821 of the roughly 1,100 community colleges in the U.S. institutions across three key dimensions: 1) Cost & Financing, 2) Education Outcomes and 3) Career Outcomes.

Education Outcomes measured student retention rates, graduation rates and number who go on to universities.

Cost and Financing considered student tuition fees, how much schools spent per student, and the total amounts of state and local financial assistance students received weighed against federal assistance and faculty and staff salaries.

Career Outcomes compared initial salaries of students in their new career fields compared to the costs of the college educations and the ratio of student loan defaults.

WalletHub reports that across the board, community colleges are slowly stacking up against their university counterparts by offering better schedule flexibility, smaller class sizes and comparatively rigorous coursework, including bachelor’s degree programs at a fraction of the university cost.

The rankings used data collected from the National Center for Education Statistics, Council for Community and Economic Research and College Measures. Rankings and methodology are listed at:
