Mr. Robert L. James was born January 19, 1940 in Americus, Georgia to the late Mr. Henry L. James and Mrs. Rosia M. Floyd James Bailey. Robert attended Nunn Industrial High School in Leslie, Georgia. He married Ossie Alford, and they eventually moved to Florida. Robert was a skillful worker and an exemplary supervisor for many years in the construction industry until his retirement. Robert could build anything and willingly shared his expertise. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, watching boxing, football and old western movies as well as listening to Al Green.
Robert, who was of the Christian faith, was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 6, 2016 in the comfort of his residence. Robert was preceded in death by both parents; a son, Nathaniel J. James; and daughter, Rosia M. James.
He leaves to cherish his memories: Wife: Ossie James of Chipley, Florida. Three sons: Robert (Angela) James, Jr. and Arthur (Dorothy) James both of Chipley, Florida and Melvin (Laurita) James of St. Croix, USVI. Two daughters: Valerie (Trent) Jones of Tallahassee, Florida and Sonya James Smith of Midway, Florida. One sister: Mattie Anderson of Detroit, Michigan. Three brother-in-laws: Mack (Martha) Alford and Otis (Annie) Alford of Americus, Georgia and Plezy L. Nelson of Leslie, Georgia. One sister-in-law: Bessie Alford of Leslie, Georgia. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Home Going Services will be held 2 P.M. CST, Saturday, August 13, 2016 from the sanctuary of the Grant Tabernacle A.M.E. Church of Chipley, FL with Rev. Sandra Jones, pastor, Rev. Plezy Nelson, Rev. Douglas Jones, Rev. France Menchion, and Rev. Henry Forward, officiating. Committal Services will follow in the Southside Cemetery of Chipley, FL.
Mr. James will lie in repose at the church on Saturday from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M. with the Cooper Funeral Home of Chipley, FL, directing.
