Weaver obit

Mrs. Gertrude Dunn Weaver passed away, at home surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, July 24, 2016.

She was born on February 10, 1919, in the Miller’s Ferry Community, Vernon, Florida to Thompson F. and Lula Knight Dunn.

At an early age, Mrs. Weaver knew that she was called as a teacher. She graduated from Vernon High School, passed the Florida State Teacher’s Exam and began teaching at Bonnet Pond School. In 1950, she received a B.A.E. from the University of Florida, in Elementary Education and Early Childhood and became a pioneer Kindergarten Teacher in Washington County. After teaching all grades K-8, she retired with 43 years as a public school teacher.

Mrs. Weaver was a member of Live Oak Baptist Church. She taught all classes in her church from primary to adults and filled every office and position other than pastor and deacon.

In addition to her service in her community, she was an active member of the Vernon High School PTA, the Vernon High School Advisory Council, a member of the Florida Education Association, Washington County Education Association, and an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Noah Dorch VFW.

Mrs. Weaver is preceded in death by her husband, Percy E. Weaver, daughter Beverly Jean Yates, sisters, Mary Alice Watson, Ruby Lee Dunn, Tommie Lee Kolmetz and Stevie Evelyn Mullins, a dear niece, Wynola Watson Devine, and a great-great nephew, Andrew Dunn Wilson.

Mrs. Weaver is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Cosson (Charles) of DeFuniak Springs, Florida and Susie Sewell (Ricky) of Vernon, Florida, grandchildren, Lisa Witherington (Mark), Kay McDonald (Dexter), Gary Sewell (Amanda), Erick Sewell (Micah), Tony Gilmore (Charlotte), Gwen Gieman (Eddie), and Derek Gilmore, eight great grandchildren, Andrew Easterling, Lorelai Sewell, Katy Sewell, Erica Sconyers (Jeff), Lee Gilmore, Gidget Sanders, Bridgett Turney (Jim), and Marcus Grimes, and six great great grandchildren, Jusiah, Jaylin, Kennedy, Maredith, Garrison and Grace and also numerous nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Live Oak Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tim Lanham officiating. Burial will follow in the Dunn-Raley Cemetery.
